Simple ways to lower your summer AC bill
Texas summers run long and hot, so the AC works for months. These tips come from the U.S. Department of Energy, and most of them cost nothing.
Set the thermostat a little higher
The Department of Energy says running your AC at 78°F instead of 72°F can save between 6 and 18 percent on your cooling bill.
Turn it up when no one's home
Turning your thermostat back 7 to 10 degrees for 8 hours a day can save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling. A programmable or smart thermostat can do it for you every day.
Let ceiling fans do some of the work
A ceiling fan lets you raise the thermostat about 4°F with no loss in comfort. Fans cool people, not rooms, so switch them off when you leave.
Know what each kWh costs you
Using less power saves more when you know your price. Find the average price per kWh on your plan's Electricity Facts Label, and your monthly use on your bill.
